Video Game Championships
The 2016 EWB Video Game Championships were held on April 23rd, 2016 at the Regional Center for Advanced Manufacturing (RCAM) in Kingsport, TN. This event was a fundraiser to raise funds for the Samne, Peru clean drinking water project. This community has a very real and urgent need for clean, safe drinking water. Over 30 participants from age 5 to 37 came out to compete! Thanks to the help of our sponsors, Jasco Games, Wal-mart, G2K Games, East Coast Wings, and Domino’s, we were able to raise over $650 in support of the Samne project! A special thanks to RCAM for hosting the event this year!
During the morning session, participants enjoyed 8 races in Mario Kart 8 with hopes of qualifying for the round of the Top 16. When players weren't competing, they could enjoy a social game of cornhole or partake in donuts and pizza, along with having a chance to win gift card door prizes.
For the Top 16 round and onwards, competitors that advanced deeper in the tournament played a gauntlet of Nintendo games: Super Smash Bros for Wii U, The Legend of Zelda: Tri Force Heroes, Pokken Tournament, Mario Tennis: Ultra Smash, and Super Mario Maker!
After the dust had settled, Will Galloway emerged victorious as the winner of the tournament, Joseph Puhr took 2nd Place, Ethan Wellman took 3rd place, and Sara Morawetz-Joyner placed 4th. On behalf of EWB and the tournament planning committee, we would like to give a special thank you to everyone who participated in the event, and we hope that everyone is looking forward to next year’s event!
